Filled Under:

The Super Bowl of Marketing

We all talk about those over-the-top, memorable Super Bowl ads for weeks after the game.

Who can forget the “God Made a Farmer/ Paul Harvey” spot for Ram Trucks from two years ago? And last year’s Budweiser’s heart-tugging “Puppy Love” commercial with its famous Clydesdales?  While corporations spend millions on ads like these, small and medium-sized marketers can conduct equally as effective marketing campaigns around Super Bowl – and other holidays and events – for a fraction of the cost. And they can be just as memorable to your customers.

Capitalize on Super Bowl Excitement

Every student on campus is going to be watching the Super Bowl. They have been talking about it for weeks. They have been placing friendly bets on which team – the Seattle Seahawks or the New England Patriots – will be victorious this year. The air is filled with fun and excitement over the game itself and parties students are going to. Capitalize on students’ enthusiasm with your own special events and promotions. For example, offer students who wear a jersey representing their favorite team into your business 10 percent off their orders. Or, employees dressed as football players or one of the team’s mascots could hold your sign or hand out coupons or specials. You can put an ad promoting your Super Bowl specials inside every student’s mailbox. There are so many easy, inexpensive ways to share your customers’ excitement for the big game.

Go Viral and Social
While huge brands such as Budweiser spend millions of dollars on ads, there are some easy, digital ways to get your message to students. And, of course, there is nothing more important to your Generation Z customers than their phones and tablets. Text is the primary way they communicate, and they are constantly watching videos on YouTube. Why not make a fun, viral video with your smartphone that is catchy enough for students to share – not only with their fellow classmates, but with others around the country and the world. For example, Nutri-Ninja, which makes professional blenders, is gaining a ton of attention for its Super Bowl viral video. And the company saved $4.5 million on a 30-second Super Bowl commercial.

Before and during the game, engage your customers on social media, including Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This is not necessarily about promoting a special that you are running – although that can be mentioned as an aside. This is about building a lasting relationship with customers by asking them what they like about their favorite team and players, where they are watching the Super Bowl, and other relevant questions.

Marketing is Not Just for Super Bowl

While Super Bowl provides a great opportunity to engage with your core customers, it is not the only time to put some of these fun, viral marketing methods into play. Valentine’s Day will be here soon. There are so many easy ways to let your customers know they are loved and appreciated on this special day – and boost your sales in the process. Groundhog Day is another fun holiday. Since many other companies will forget about this day, your company will stand out if you conduct marketing both leading up to Groundhog Day and the day of. St. Patrick’s Day will be the next big opportunity to get your message across.

Stamp Free Ads can help you capitalize on these major events and holidays. We place a business card-sized advertisement promoting your business on the inside of student mail boxes. Students will see this each and every time they open the mailbox door. Put a call to action to visit your business with a coupon or special offer as part of these ads. You can even include a mention of your superior reviews and customer satisfaction. These will drive more students to visit your website, often using their mobile device before they even leave the mail center. Of course, this drives more traffic to your front door. All for just one penny per day!
